A backup earning a bigger role is real news. Turning that into 'workhorse back' before the depth chart says so is how fantasy drafters overpay.

Carolina head coach Dave Canales has confirmed Chuba Hubbard is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, and Jonathon Brooks is now penciled in to start Carolina's preseason opener. Brooks' ADP has climbed through the summer and sits around pick 102 in consensus formats as of this week — real, dated movement, not a projection.

That's a legitimate opportunity, but it's worth being precise about the ceiling: even in an extended-absence scenario for Hubbard, a reasonable read on Carolina's usage plan caps Brooks at roughly two-thirds of the backfield's snaps rather than a true three-down workhorse role. That's a good RB2 outcome, not automatically a league-winner.

A bigger role is real. A workhorse role is a different, bigger claim — check which one the depth chart actually supports.

The practical takeaway for drafters: Brooks at his current ADP is a fair price for the role he's actually likely to hold. The risk is what tends to happen next — continued negative Hubbard news pushing Brooks' price up faster than his actual opportunity is growing, which is exactly the point where a legitimately good pickup turns into an overpay.
